Kitchener city councillors are poised to vote on a motion tonight that if passed would ban the feeding of most wildlife in the city.
The move comes amid concerns the practice attracts such animals as ducks, raccoons, skunks and rats to residential neighbourhoods.
There are plenty of stories about what happens when wildlife is lured into the city.
City Councillor Dave Schnider tells the Record, “There have been situations where people have left chicken carcasses and pizza in their yards to feed wildlife.”
Schnider says, they don’t just stay in that yard, but venture onto neighbouring properties and in many cases, cause problems there.
They’ve ended up making garden sheds their homes and put pets at risk.
If approved, as is, the bylaw would not include bird feeders.
The bylaw is aimed at private property as feeding wildlife on public property is already illegal.
