Baycats sweep Panthers, advance to fifth straight IBL final

The Barrie Baycats will be going to their fifth straight Intercounty Baseball League final.

The ‘Cats turned to game one starter Emilis Guerrero for game four and he did not disappoint.

Guerrero threw a complete-game shutout, giving up only two hits, striking out eight and walking one in a 3-0 win over the Kitchener Panthers Saturday night.

The Panthers had Matt McGovern on the hill and he did all he could to keep the Panthers within striking distance. Kitchener gave up a run in the second inning on an error after a Kyle Nichols double. Nichols would score after the error to give the Baycats a 1-0 lead.

Fast forward to the sixth inning where Barrie would add to their lead. Jordan Castaldo would hit a double and then advance to third after Kitchener recorded the first out of the sixth. Kyle Nichols came to the plate and walked on six pitches. Jeff Cowan would hit a sac fly to left field to score Castaldo to increase their lead by two.

Matt McGovern would get the first out of the seventh inning but was replaced by reliever Mitch Clarke.

Clarke would get the second out which would bring Ryan Spataro to the plate. He would be safe at first after an error by third baseman, David Whiteside. Clarke would take care of Baycats hitter Kyle DeGrace with a strikeout to get out of the inning.

The Panthers would get their first hit of the game in the eighth inning, where Justin Interisano would breakthrough and single. That would be the only hit for the Panthers in the eighth.

Clarke would get the first out of the bottom of the eighth inning, striking out Jordan Castaldo. Mike Schnurr came in to pitch the rest of the inning. He gave up a home run to Kevin Atkinson, the first batter he would face. Panthers trail, 3-0. Schnurr got Kyle Nichols to fly out to shortstop for the second out. Cowan came to the plate looking to add to the lead but he would single. Schnurr struck out Branfy Infante to get out of the inning.

In the ninth, the Panthers recorded their second hit of the game on a Mike Andrulis single. Guerrero would get the next two outs, striking out both Luke Baker and Tanner Nivins. Mike Glinka would fly out to the shortstop for the final out.

Barrie sweeps the Panthers, 4-0.

The Baycats will try and defend their IBL championship. They will face the winner of the London Majors and Toronto Maple Leafs series.
