Cambridge Mayor Doug Craig steps down from Multiplex Task Force

Cambridge Mayor Doug Craig is stepping down from his role on the Multiplex Task Force.

The controversial project got a lot of attention when it was announced they’d be building the project on the edge of Cambridge.

At a meeting Thursday night people rallied against a proposal to have the project on leased Conestoga College land, and demanded the city to throw it out and start over.

“I can build this downtown in a central location,” said Craig on the Eric Drozd Show. “You’re going to have to wait six or seven years until I assemble all the land, pay for all the expropriation.”

“And in the end, you’re not going to have four ice pads, you may only have one. You’re not going to have two pools, you’re only going to get one. Instead of three gyms, you might get two.”

A vote on the college land lease is expected in October.

Craig says he doesn’t understand why so many are upset about the Conestoga College location.

“There’s about 12,000 students out there, and it would have been a shared facility for them in the daytime when its at it’s least use. It’s in the city of Cambridge, it’s not in Kitchener. It’s not going to be used by Kitchener residents exclusively because all the times and tournaments would have been Cambridge first.”

Craig is stepping down voluntarily, after the people of Cambridge asked him to do so.
