Bingemans Centre connects to Wellington through HWY 7 expansion

An update on the Highway 7 expansion through Kitchener.

It was announced Thursday that Bingemans Centre Drive will connect directly to Wellington Street by the expressway. This means motorists can avoid turning on Shirley Avenue.

Work is expected to begin on Shirley Avenue later this month and should be completed by fall of 2017. Construction will include widening Shirley from two to four lanes and adding a two-way left turn lane.

“It’s really important for us to do this advanced work before the new Highway gets built. We’re going to be closing Victoria as the bridge has to be closed at the expressway. As that is closed, traffic will have to go somewhere– so that’s why it’s going to be diverted to this new Shirley Avenue that will be widened,” said Daiene Vernile, local MPP and Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Transportation.

The Highway 7 expansion also includes widening Victoria Street, reconstructing Wellington Street North, replacing bridges, and then constructing sidewalks and bike lanes on Shirley.
