2 medals on day 8 at Rio Olympics drive Canada to 12 overall

Brianne Theisen-Eaton put a tough first day behind her, battling back for a bronze medal in the women’s heptathlon on Day 8 in Rio.

The Canadian track cycling pursuit team also earned a bronze to give Canada 12 total medals — two gold, two silver and eight bronze. All 12 medals have been won by women.

There won’t be a fifth medal for 16-year old swimming sensation Penny Oleksiak. She and her teammates finished fifth in the women’s 4×100 medley relay.

Oleksiak is already the most decorated Canadian athlete at a single Summer Games. Also, Ryan Cochrane finished sixth in the men’s 15-hundred-metre freestyle.

Sprinter Andre De Grasse cruised to the semifinals of the men’s 100 metres. He turned it on in the final 50 metres to finish first in his heat in a time of 10.04 seconds.

Divers Jennifer Abel and Pamela Ware both advanced to the finals of the individual three-metre springboard.

Abel finished third overall and Ware was ninth.

They’re hoping for medals in the individual event after narrowly missing the podium in the synchronized three-metre springboard a week ago.

In beach volleyball, the undefeated duo of Sarah Pavan and Heathen Bansley advanced to the women’s quarter-finals with a 2-0 win over fellow Canadians Jamie Broder and Kristina Valjas.

In badminton, Michelle Li won her first group stage match and Calgary’s Martin Giuffre improved to 1-and-1.

And Graham DeLaet and David Hearn both shot a 3-over 74 in third round action to tie for 44th in men’s golf.
