North American markets down slightly from recent highs, loonie rises

TORONTO – The Toronto Stock Exchange and major U.S. markets are down slightly in late morning trading.

The S&P/TSX composite index is down 14.84 points at 14,781.22, still near its highest level this year.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell by 15.48 points at 18,598.04, the broader S&P 500 composite index barely slipped, down 0.46 of a point to 2,185.33, and the Nasdaq composite lost 1.27 points to 5,227.13.

The Canadian dollar was at 77.33 cents US, up 0.29 of a cent from Thursday’s close.

The September crude contract was up $1.01 at US$44.50 per barrel and September natural gas was up 6.4 cents at US$2.62 per mmBTU.

The December gold contract rose $9 to US$1,351.50 an ounce and September copper contracts fell three cents to US$2.16 a pound.
