The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been called in after a stabbing and “police-involved” shooting near Yonge-Dundas Square.

The SIU said Toronto police were called to Dundas Street, near Yonge Street, after a 66-year-old man was stabbed around 5 a.m. on Monday.

When officers got to the scene around 6 a.m., they confronted a 39-year-old man on Dundas, between Yonge and Bay streets, and fired several shots, the SIU said.

“The 39-year-old man was linked to the initial stabbing,” SIU spokesman Jason Gennaro said. “Two incidents that are part of one larger incident.”

A witness at the scene told CityNews he saw a well-dressed man get into an altercation with a homeless man on Yonge. He said the well-dressed man stabbed the homeless man and then fled on Dundas. Later, that same man lunged at officers with a knife and was shot by police on Dundas after officers demanded he drop the knife in his hand, the witness said.

The man who was shot was rushed to hospital, where he remains. His injuries are not life-threatening.

The 66-year-old was treated for this injuries and has since been released from hospital.

Dundas remains closed between Yonge and Bay streets for the investigation.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
