Olympic profile: Andrea Seccafien (Guelph)

In a way, Guelph’s Andrea Seccafien, feels somewhat lucky to be heading to the Rio Olympics.

“Things just really worked out for me,” said the 25-year-old runner.

Seccafien has made a lot of improvements since the start of 2016. She tells 570 News she didn’t think she had a fast enough time to qualify for the games.

“I’m just really glad I’m going and super excited to represent Canada in my first major games and really excited to see what the Olympics are like.”

The former University of Guelph Gryphon was able to run the 5,000 metre in 15:17.81, which is a personal best and beat the Olympic standard of 15:20.

Seccafien also has quite the comeback story as well, as she didn’t race at all in 2015 due to a foot injury.

She and 12 other Olympians will be training in Guelph on Wednesday, August 3rd.

The women’s 5,000 metre race is set for Tuesday, August 16th.
