Wilfrid Laurier approves new contract with CUPE Local 926

The official stamp of approval has been put on Wilfrid Laurier University’s new contract with the union representing approximately 110 custodial, grounds and trades employees.

The three-year agreement is retroactive to July 1, 2015 and expires June 30, 2018.

The agreement includes a 1.5% pay raise each year and 0.5% increase as pension and post-retirement benefits offsets – January 2017, July 2017, January 2018.

On top of that, the university now has the ability to contract out work as custodial positions become vacant through attrition.

“I would like to recognize the time and effort put forth to reach this settlement,” said Max Blouw, president and vice-chancellor of Wilfrid Laurier University. “We achieved a fair and responsible agreement that is in line with other settlements at Laurier and across the university sector.”

Negotiations between the university and CUPE Local 926 began nearly 10 months ago. The union began strike action July 10, but the parties were able to reach a tentative agreement on July 15. It was ratified two days later.
