TORONTO – Blue Jays designated hitter Edwin Encarnacion was suspended for one game by Major League Baseball on Sunday and fined an undisclosed amount for making contact with an umpire.
Encarnacion bumped home plate umpire Vic Carapazza in the first inning of Friday’s 2-1 loss to the Cleveland Indians when arguing balls and strikes.
Blue Jays manager John Gibbons was also ejected from the game for the same incident, while catcher Russell Martin was kicked out later in the game also for arguing with Carapazza.
Encarnacion’s suspension was scheduled to be served Sunday afternoon as the Blue Jays concluded their four-game series with Cleveland.
However, Encarnacion has elected to appeal, putting the punishment in abeyance until the process is complete.
