What you should know about firework safety

It’s tradition to set off fireworks for Canada Day, but safety should also be part of the celebration.

John Percy is the Public Education Officer with Waterloo Fire Safety and says it’s important to have water on hand in case a fire breaks out.

“Have a garden hose or a pail of water because you want to make sure that if there is a grass fire or debris ignites you want to be able to put it out promptly.”

Percy also suggests checking wind conditions before setting of fireworks.

“If it is windy, we do not recommend that people shoot off fireworks because the debris and the ashes could go into a neighbouring property and could start a fire there.”

Percy urges that only adults should be lighting fireworks and they are not under the influence.

“You do need proper supervision when shooting off fire works, so you want to have someone assigned.”

If you are letting little ones play with sparklers, it is important to keep a watchful eye and if they do get burned put skin under cold water for 3-5 minuets and if it is sever to seek medical attention.
