Unifor’s latest union drive at Toyota fails

Canada’s largest private sector union has been shut out of Toyota in Cambridge and Woodstock.

The results are in from a vote of close to 500 maintenance workers held in the past few days and it shows they narrowly rejected having Unifor represent them.

While Unifor has tried in the past to unionize workers at those plants, this is the first time they were actually allowed to vote.

The union says in a statement, “While Unifor would have preferred a successful outcome, we believe that Toyota maintenance workers can be proud to have had their say in a democratic workplace vote. Many workers voted in favour of being represented by Unifor and we remain hopeful that these workers will soon be part of our union.”

As for previous efforts to represent close to 8,000 Toyota production workers, the union says that goal is still on the table.

It says the organizing campaign continues, although it’s not clear when or even if, Unifor will make another bid for a unionization vote.
