New signs for roundabouts in Waterloo Region this summer

A recent update to the Highway Traffic Act will mean some changes to local roundabouts this summer.

The updates include new “yield to pedestrian” signs, new road markers approaching the crosswalks, and lowered speed limits coming up to the roundabouts.

Bob Henderson, Manager of Transportation Engineering with the Region, he tells 570 News that they have 24 roundabouts to go through, and that could take up to three months.

Crews will start putting up the new signs and road markings in July.

He adds that he is very happy with the current safety measures for pedestrians, but the new signs can’t hurt.

“We are very optimistic that we will continue to see that good trend at roundabouts with the introduction of these new signs.”

The project is expected to cost $200,000 with an additional $50,000 going towards public education.

Henderson stresses the importance of education for drivers. Motorists caught disobeying the sign could face a $500 fine.
