Special Olympics open Thursday in Guelph

The City of Guelph is turning into Athletes’ Village for the next three days.

The Special Olympics Ontario’s Spring Games get underway on Thursday.

Over 1,000 athletes and coaches are in Guelph for what will be the largest spring games in the SOO’s history.

The athletes will compete in such sports as basketball, swimming, bowling, powerlifting and gymnastics.

Games Manager Chris Probst tells 570 News he couldn’t turn down the chance to get involved.

“…You’ll see the energy, you’ll see the sportsmanship, it’s next to none.”

Probst adds the volunteer response has been amazing. They have 650 people helping out this week.

The Games are billed as a celebration of inclusion and the power of sport.
