Six English books, three poetry titles shortlisted for Trillium Book Award

TORONTO – Six books and three poetry titles have been shortlisted in English-language categories for the 2016 Trillium Book Award honouring Ontario-based writers.

In the book category, Ottawa-born, Peterborough-based Andrew Forbes is shortlisted for “What You Need” (Invisible Publishing) alongside Toronto’s Kevin Hardcastle for “Debris” (Biblioasis). Forbes and Hardcastle are also shortlisted for the upcoming Danuta Gleed Literary Award for short fiction.

Saskatchewan-born, Peterborough-based Janette Platana was selected for “A Token of My Affliction” (Tightrope Books), along with Moose Jaw, Sask.-born, Toronto-based Karen Solie for “The Road In Is Not The Same Road Out” (House of Anansi Press).

Rounding out the short list are Torontonians Lynn Crosbie for “Where Did You Sleep Last Night” (House of Anansi Press) and Robert Hough for “The Man Who Saved Henry Morgan,” (House of Anansi Press)

Griffin Poetry Prize nominee Soraya Peerbaye of Toronto has been shortlisted in the Trillium Book English-language poetry category for “Tell: poems for a girlhood” (Pedlar Press)

Also on the list are Guelph-based Madhur Anand for “A New Index for Predicting Catastrophes,” (McClelland and Stewart) and Toronto’s Damian Rogers for “Dear Leader” (Coach House Books.)

The five French-language books shortlisted are:

— Alain Doom, “Un neurinome sur une balancoire” (Editions Prise de parole)

— Caroline Durand, “Nourrir la machine humaine” (McGill-Queen’s University Press)

— Veronique-Marie Kaye, “Marjorie Chalifoux” (Editions Prise de parole)

— Didier Leclair, “Pour l’amour de Dimitri (Editions David)

— Carlos Taveira, “Mots et marees, tome 2 : Les maux de Marie-Josephe-Angelique (Les Editions L’Interligne)

The French-language poetry finalists are:

— Sonia Lamontagne, “Comptine a rebours” (Editions Prise de parole)

— Gilles Latour, “Mots qu’elle a faits terre,” (Les Editions de L’Interligne)

— David Menard, “Neuvaines,” (Les Editions L’Interligne)

Recipients of the Trillium Book Award receive $20,000, and their respective publishers receive $2,500 to promote the winning titles. All finalists receive a $500 honorarium.

Poetry winners each receive $10,000, and their publisher $2,000 for promotion of the titles. Finalists for these awards also receive a $500 honorarium.

Previous winners have included Margaret Atwood, Michael Ondaatje and Nobel Prize winner Alice Munro.

The winners will be announced at a dinner in Toronto on June 22.
