Conestoga president still thinks multiplex offer is a good one

At one point it was considered a done deal, but after a special council meeting this week, it became clear the Cambridge multiplex may not land at the Conestoga College site after all.

Conestoga is often the forgotten partner in this ongoing debate.

According to college president John Tibbits they still think their offer is a good one, but he respects the decision of Cambridge City Council, “We stand by what we did, we still think it is a valid opportunity for the city to build something bigger and better, and offer more services to the citizens, but we are not taking it personally.”

Tibbits also says some misconceptions about the deal have hurt the public’s perception.

He says the initial offer was made to be a good community partner.

The college had excess land and could offer a site for a low cost. Tibbits says it was never meant to be shared facility, “These facilities very rarely operate 24/7 so we thought if it is not being fully utilized our students could use them at a fee, but obviously the city of Cambridge residents would have first choice.” Said Tibbits.

As a result of the special meeting held May 16th, a final decision for the site won’t be made until late September 29th.

Council and staff are now looking into other possible sites.
