Waterloo Region Chinese Community Association hosting fundraiser for Fort McMurray

The Waterloo Region Chinese Community Association is putting on a fundraiser to assist those affected by the devastating wildfires in Fort McMurray.

The event will include performances, a BBQ and activities for the whole family.

Gang Pan is President of the Association and says all the proceeds and donations from the event will be handed over to the Red Cross.

“We’re looking for all kinds of items. Any essentials or anything you would see at a garage sale, even art– we already have some Chinese artists donating paintings. And of course, we’re also looking for cash donations.”

Pan adds that helping fellow Canadians is very important to the Chinese Community.

“For most of us, Canada is our second home. So we feel that if our neighbours are dealing with this fire, we have to reach out and help them. Also back in 2008, there was a big earthquake in China. Canadians actually donated $30-million to that relief effort, so we think it’s about time we show our appreciation to our Canadian friends and the Canadian government.”

Pan says they are expecting around 500 people to come out to the fundraiser, including Waterloo Mayor Dave Jaworsky.

“We welcome everyone to this event! Even if you’re not involved with the Chinese Community Association, this is open to everyone in Waterloo Region. We just want to be able to come together to support these fire victims.”

The fundraiser runs from 11 am to 3 pm at 500 Dotzert Court in Waterloo.
