WCDSB hosts ‘Friends of Fort McMurray Day’

Today is ‘Friends of Fort McMurray Day’ at all of Waterloo Region’s Catholic schools!

John Shewchuk with the Waterloo Catholic District School Board tells us about the initiative.

“Today was Friends of Fort McMurray day at Waterloo Region Catholic Schools and administrative sites. It was put in place to help our friends in Alberta cope with the devastating wildfires that we’ve all seen the gruesome images of. It’s just horrible what’s happened to these folks so that we decided we would step up to give them a hand.”

Shewchuk says this isn’t the first time the WCDSB has raised money to help with Red Cross relief efforts.

“Our school system has a long history of stepping up when natural disasters strike. Since 1998, we’ve raised more than $5-million for various causes including the southeast Asia Tsunami and the earthquake in Haiti. Now it’s Alberta, and even though it may seem a ways away, it’s still right here in our backyard and it’s time for us to step up and help our friends.”

Shewchuk adds that final totals aren’t in yet, but he believes the day was pretty successful.

“Everyone has until next Friday to give us their totals, but some schools have been so excited that are already sending in theirs. 7 of our 52 schools have responded and among those 7 schools, we’ve brought in a total of $14,000 so far. So we’re projecting our final total is going to be outstanding.”
