New men’s b-ball coach introduced at Laurier

The Laurier Golden Hawks have locked up a key piece for the men’s basketball program.

The Hawks have named Justin Serresse head coach and manager of men’s basketball operations after spending five years as assistant coach with the Ottawa Gee-Gees, earning three CIS medals and four OUA medals.

The 29-year-old from Rouen, France takes over from Peter Campbell, who had spent 16 years with the Golden Hawks.

Serresse calls it an honour and privilege:

“It’s a little bit nerve-wracking, but it’s exciting, because I want to build on his legacy; I want to build on what he’s done so far here, and I think there’s a great opportunity.”

“A few years ago, I told myself I was going to try to become a head coach in three years, and three years later, I’m the head coach, so I’m pretty happy about that and very proud of it,” Serresse adds.

“As a coach who comes from one of the top programs in the country year-in and year-out, Justin will bring with him the experience of recruiting some of the top players in Canada, along with an advanced knowledge of strategic game-planning,” says Peter Baxter, the director of athletics and recreation.

“On top of that, he is young and possesses an energy level that will help us reach our goal of being one of the top teams in the nation.”

According to Serresse, being at Laurier comes with its recruiting perks, too.

“Being able to be close to the GTA, and close to London, and all those towns that have great talent, and being able to recruit on any given day — drive one, two hours and be there — is something very special,” he says.
