Local woman living in Fort McMurray heads north

Loveita Adams has been in the limelight lately for her role on Big Brother Canada Season 4.

But the Cambridge native isn’t too focused on the TV Series right now.

Adams and her sister grew up in Waterloo Region but are now living in Fort Mac.

She tells 570 News that seeing the smoke, flames, and evacuating was a surreal experience.

“Ash was falling from the sky, I felt out of sorts and I realized that I had to get going (…) it was definitely a scary feeling.”

Adams’ sister doesn’t drive and all the cab companies were shut down. Loveita says it was certainly stressful trying to leave.

“People were frantic and everybody was initially trying to go south so traffic was at a standstill and I was thinking ‘I need to go faster than we’re moving. How is everyone going to safely get out of here if we’re all jam packed like sardines going in the same direction.'”

“It’s amazing to see how people are working together to help each other out (…) a lot of people are going to be in need after this fire, Fort McMurray is going to need a lot of support.”

Adams has been able to contact family in Cambridge and is hoping to head to Edmonton soon. However, to get there, she would have to drive back through Fort McMurray.

Right now, like thousands others, she is simply waiting to hear what happens next.
