Waterloo’s RIM Park hosting skills competition

Over 2,000 students will compete in areas such as 3D animation, welding, baking and auto service and beyond.

It’s a chance for students in the Region of Waterloo to showcase their talents when it comes to skilled trades.

The competition features over 67 contests and students will compete for medals in each contest.

Anne Ramsay is the Communications Officer at Skills Ontario and she tells us students have an opportunity to get job offers on the spot.

“It really solidifies their career choice. What they want to go on to study in college or what apprenticeship they want to pursue. After the competition a lot of the students may also get job offers.

Ramsay adds that students who win medals may be offered a job on the spot or an apprenticeship.

“For post-secondary Plumbing and Sheet Metal contests, the gold medallist will also be offered an apprenticeship with Hymark. Medallists in the Automation Control, Industrial Mechanic and megatronics contests will also be offered jobs by Magna International.”

Competitors are judged on their skills related to their field, as well as their job interview skills and related soft skills.

The event begins today and runs until Wednesday at RIM Park in Waterloo.
