Region of Waterloo warns of new home water audit scam

The Region of Waterloo is warning us of a new scam that’s been going door-to-door.

Officials say some homeowners have been approached by scammers claiming to be with the Region’s WET Challenge home water audit program, and are offering to do an in-home inspection for a fee.

Dan Meaghar with the Region says they do have a WET Challenge home water audit program, but it does NOT work like this.

“Through the Region’s program you will receive an official letter from the Region with our letterhead and our phone number. If anyone is asking to charge you for these services, it’s definitely not from us.”

Meaghar says their WET Challenge program is completely free to anyone with high water use– and believes this scam has arose because a private company is now using their program to go to homes and confuse customers into signing up with them.

“They’re misleading customers because they are referencing our program which is a free in-home audit program. These scammers are using our initiative to confuse homeowners and make it seem like they are affiliated with us.”

Meaghar adds that if you received a letter from the Region, you can call them directly at 519-575-4400 ext. 3151 to verify it’s authenticity.
