Spring cleaning may make you happier, according to survey

Warm weather is finally here and that means many of us are starting to think about the daunting task of spring cleaning– but if you’re dreading the process, there may be some serious benefits to tidying up!

According to a new survey by Schick Intuition, 92 per cent of Canadian mothers say taking steps to simplify their lives actually improves their happiness.

Christine Jew is a Brand Manager with Schick and tells us about their findings.

“We took responses from mom’s across Canada and they were used to create the Schick Intuition ‘Simplicity Curve’– and that showed a direct correlation between happiness and simplicity. Our research shows that happiness spikes when people take deliberate steps to make life more manageable and embrace a philosophy of voluntary simplicity.”

Jew says the results from over 750 mothers across our country show that simplifying your life through cleaning and decluttering will actually increase your mood.

“The most popular step is decluttering the house and getting rid of extra stuff– 80 per cent of moms purge the things they don’t need. Other easy steps include managing emails, using a calendar system and even just ordering-in dinners occasionally.”

Jew says finding the right products can also help simplify your life.

“We find that 8 in 10 moms look for these kinds of products and services, because even these small changes can help contribute to a simpler lifestyle. So for example, using a 3-in-1 razor that you don’t need to prep can really help– it’s a compound effect. Really, it’s about simplifying little things in your life to make your overall routine simpler and happier.”

Jew adds that happiness levels vary among mothers– with research showing 29 per cent of moms are happy, 38 per cent are neutral and 33 per cent are unhappy – but 92 per cent of moms agreed that simplifying aspects of their life makes them happier.
