Cambridge residents rally against sports multiplex

More than 100 people turned out for a rally last night in Galt to show their opposition to a planned new sports multiplex.

Many of those in attendance do not have a problem with the idea of such a facility, but they do not support the location.
It would be erected on Conestoga College lands along Highway 401.

They say it will be too far away for most Cambridge residents to access conveniently.

Ken Tuckey, one of the people that attended the rally, says, “It’s arguably the most important decision made by council this decade. … We need to let them know we’re not happy about the site.”

Lead organizer Bill Kirby told the crowd there was little in the way of public imput, adding, “What I expect as a citizen, if I’m going to be asked to eat a substantial tax increase – I’m going to want to know how you came to that conclusion.”

Organizers of the rally hope they caught the attention of city council, which is expected to vote on the facility’s budget and concept plans at a meeting this Monday.

Early indications are the multiplex could cost up to $70-million.
