Kitchener SOTC focuses on innovation, neighbourhoods & ‘Make It Kitchener’ campaign

Kitchener Mayor Berry Vrbanovic has delivered his annual State of The City Address.

He announced the City is launching its neighbourhood strategy consultation at a party on April 26 followed by Neighbours Day on June 11.

“We are all makers. Whether you create hardware, software or art. You are part of the maker community,” said Vrbanovic.

Vrbanovic’s State of the City coincides with the launch of Kitchener’s Economic Development Strategy.

The ‘State of the City’ address was held at 41 Ardelt Place in Kitchener, the location of local company Double R Steel Inc.

The theme of this year’s Address is focusing on strong neighbourhoods by looking to the future of Kitchener’s growing economy.

Vrbanovic said the ‘Make it Kitchener’ initiative is a bold and exciting approach to economic development in our City, and will capture the intangible qualities that make Kitchener an inspiring and exciting place to be.

Other highlights from Vrbanovic’s address include noting the $750,000 investment to improve and widen the central part of the Iron Horse Trail and announcing the new electronic tool ‘Engage Kitchener’– which aims to make it easy for residents to give feedback on future City projects and gives the public an opportunity to get involved.

During last year’s speech, Vrbanovic focused heavily on recognizing outstanding members of our community and even introduced the Mayor’s City Builder award– which honours an individual, group or organization that has committed their time to building a better Kitchener.
