Region plans to spend over $40 million on downtown Kitchener transit hub

The Region of Waterloo plans to spend $43 million to build a transit hub at King and Victoria in downtown Kitchener.

The Record reports council has voted to proceed with a design-bid-build process. The money will include the cost of transit infrastructure procurement and parking.

The site is expected to include a hub for light rail, VIA rail, GO Transit and Grand River Transit. It will also be home to a
mix of residential, office and retail space.

The region will hire a developer or consortium of developers to build it, but the timing of the project is uncertain.

Officials with the region say they will not move ahead, without some funding from the provincial or federal governments.
