Wilfrid Laurier pulls out of Prime Minister Statue Project

Wilfrid Laurier University will no longer be participating in the Prime Minister Statue project.

The school’s board of governors passed the motion convincingly yesterday. Laurier president and vice-chancellor Max Blouw says the vote reflects the best interest of the University.

“The high emotions that were associated with opposition to the project we’re starting to erode, what are otherwise really positive, productive, important working relationships, and getting in the way of the work of the University,” says Blouw.

He says the whole thing just became too much of a distraction.

“Students were involved, faculty involved, staff were involved, and the important work of the University gets distracted and everything gets delayed and slowed down, and it’s not a good environment,” says Blouw.

“I was the one who placed the motion and I certainly support the decision of the board.”

There’s only one statue on the grounds right now, which is one of Sir John A MacDonald. It also spent some time at The Kitchener Memorial Auditorium and downtown at The Museum.

It’ll stay at Laurier until the school talks to the people who donated it.
