Multiple Cambridge public schools placed in hold and secure situation

Waterloo Region District School Board says Avenue Road Public School, Elgin Street Public School, and Manchester Public School in Cambridge were placed in a hold and secure this afternoon.

The announcement came out over Twitter just after 11 a.m.

Police said they were conducting an investigation in that area, and that the emergency response team and trauma team were working with the schools.

Staff Sgt. Mike Haffner with WRPS tells 570 News about the situation.

“At approximately 9 am this morning, police received a call from a concerned citizen about a male in crisis. As a result, we deployed our strategic response team along with negotiators, and as a result of negotiations there has been a successful conclusion and the male is getting the proper support.”

Haffner added that situations like this can always be potentially volatile, which is why they contacted the schools as a precaution.

The hold and secure was lifted around noon.

“Officials are still investigating the incident and the information that we initially received. As a result, criminal charges could potentially be laid against the individual– but at this time, we are more concerned about getting that individual the proper support,” said Haffner.
