PM TRUDEAU TO ANNOUNCE BIG BOOST IN SUMMER JOBS PROGRAM

The federal government is going to lay out a hefty increase in cash in hopes of creating more jobs for students this summer. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will make an announcement today in Toronto. The Canadian Press has learned that Trudeau will announce a doubling of the Canada Summer Jobs program in the hopes of creating an additional 35,000 student summer jobs. The program created more than 34,000 jobs last year.

LIBERALS MISFIRE ON GUN-MARKING PLEDGE

The Liberal government has broken a promise to immediately implement firearm-marking regulations to help police trace guns used in crime. As the Trudeau government reached today’s milestone of 100 days in office, the pledge had not been fulfilled. In their election platform, the Liberals said they would “immediately” implement regulations that require that specific, identifiable markings be stamped on firearms.

OLAND SEEKS RELEASE ON BAIL

Lawyers for Dennis Oland will be in court today trying to get him released on bail pending an appeal of his second degree murder conviction in the death of his father. The New Brunswick man’s parole eligibility was set at 10 years yesterday — second degree murder carries an automatic life prison sentence. The Oland family is best known for having founded Moosehead Breweries.

POLL: MOST PEOPLE DON’T WANT AN UBER BAN

An online poll has found most people questioned don’t want a ban on the ride hailing service Uber, but support having it regulated like the taxi industry. Some 15-hundred people responded to the Angus Reid Institute poll conducted last month. Two-thirds of respondents said Uber should be regulated but more than 70 per cent said they were open to Uber doing business in their communities.

DRAKE TO RECEIVE TORONTO’S KEY TO THE CITY

Toronto Mayor John Tory says his plans to give hometown rap star Drake, a.k.a. Drizzy, the key to the city today is just the start of a long working relationship between the two. “He is devoted to the city, he loves this city, he promotes this city and he and I have chatted and he wants to help this city, help some of the kids that need a bit of inspiration,” Tory told The Canadian Press Thursday evening.
