Kitchener and Toronto’s mayor call for tech corridor between the two cities

Kitchener Mayor Berry Vrbanovic sat down with Toronto Mayor John Tory in Toronto on Thursday morning promoting the importance of two-way all-day GO service and/or high speed rail between the two regions.

Vrbanovic and Tory are expressing the need for an innovation corridor between the two cities – similar to San Francisco and Silicon Valley.

Vrbanovic says “Transit drives innovation and innovation drives economic growth….Now is the time to lead not only the province, but the country in creating a high quality of life, and a strong and competitive economy.”

“On any given workday thousands of finance and tech workers commute between the Greater Toronto Area and Waterloo Region. This partnership will strengthen advocacy for effective transit solutions that enable seamless collaboration between tech hubs, academic institutions and financial institutions throughout the innovation corridor.”

“Toronto and the Waterloo Region are no further apart than San Francisco and Silicon Valley, and are home to a diverse, highly educated population and game changing ideas,” said Mayor Tory. “We need to build our reputation as a place where great talent is nurtured, industries can grow and where we engage the public in finding innovative solutions.”

The collaboration will include Tory visiting our region in March and both Mayors heading to San Francisco in April to promote opportunities for those in Waterloo Region and Toronto.
