Together on stage: Chantal Kreviazuk and Raine Maida

They’re both JUNO Award winning artists, both humanitarians and on their current tour they are now officially a pair on stage as well as off. Chantal Kreviazuk and Raine Maida are at The Centre in the Square tonight with their collaboration MOON vs. SUN.

After years of writing songs for their own separate projects as well as for several other artists, both Kreviazuk and Maida are excited about finally being able to perform together with songs that they wrote with and for each other.

Their excitement behind the project mirrors that of their fans, many of whom have been hoping to see and hear them perform together for quite some time.

For Kreviazuk and Maida, the wait was about what they were going to say in their music.

“We have to say stuff that no one has ever said in songs before otherwise, what’s the point,” said Maida. “It takes a while to get there in a relationship where you have that kind of foundation that you think is uncrackable, even though I don’t think there probably is one.”

“Even arriving at that realization and being able to be honest about that [and] that the work is never done and that you’re a work in progress as a couple and as individuals your whole life.” continued Kreviazuk. “That revelation really freed us up as a possible duo.”

They set their bar high early in the project with their song “I Love It When You Make Me Beg.” The song, which they are justly proud of had the two wondering if they would be able to reach that bar with subsequent pieces.

“Most of the times we go to write there is a magic button somewhere in the room and it’s just a lot of fun and to be able to play those songs live is really rewarding,” said Kreviazuk, who has spent much of recent years writing for other artists, which allowed her to be with their three young sons.

It seems all roads have led to MOON vs. SUN for the pair as Maida noted that everything they’ve done over the past 20 years has in some way brought them to this show where you walk away feeling inspired.

On top of this cultivation, if you’re heading to the Centre in the Square tonight, you will hear some old favourites from Kreviazuk as well new arrangements of Our Lady Peace songs.

“It’s one of the most interesting musical experiences I have ever had as an artist,” said Maida. “The fact that I am one of the artists doing it is a privilege. It is pretty incredible.”
