Region of Waterloo launches my-waste app

The Region of Waterloo has launched a new app that aims to make household waste information more accessible.

The ‘my-waste’ app allows users to look up all of their collection day information and figure out what goes where right on their smartphones.

Cari Rastas Howard, is the Project Manager with Waste Management Programs for the Region of Waterloo and tells 570 news about the app.

“It’s been in the works for a little bit, a couple other municipalities have had similar apps. We just thought it would be a great service to offer our residents, to be able to look up for themselves whenever their collection things change.”

Rastas Howard added that it can be especially helpful for yard-waste collection as it is not something that is put out regularly.

“When we do collect yard-waste in the summer months it’s every two weeks, so it’ll be easy to just look up when the next collection day is. Another functionality of the app is that you can set a reminder for when yard-waste or any other collection day is, you can set it up as either an e-mail reminder or a pop-up reminder.”

The full range of information is also available on the Region’s website, but Rastas Howard said the app will make it even more accessible.

“We want to make it as easy as possible for people to find the information that they’re looking for about our services. Also included is our Waste Whiz functionality where if you’re not sure whether an item goes into the green bin or the blue box– you can search for that item in our app and it will tell you.”

Rastas Howard added that the functionality will be an exciting tool as waste changes are made, as it’ll be easier for residents to set-up reminders.

The free my-waste app is available from the App Store or Google Play. Blackberry users can access my-waste functions via Pingstreet, available through Blackberry World.
