Elmira District Secondary School is closed Monday due to what’s being called “an ongoing police investigation.”

Police released a statement late Monday morning: “The closure is a result of the concern and well being of an unidentified individual who contacted administrators yesterday. As a matter of caution, the school board decided to close the school.”

“For precautionary measures, the school was closed to ensure the safety, well being and security of students, staff, and the community,” said Peter Rubenschuh, Superintendent, Student Achievement and Well Being.

Staff Sergeant Mike Haffner says police and school staff want to find the person responsible to offer them support.

“Right now we’re just trying to determine who is responsible for this communication that caused the school to be closed today during exams. We are concerned about the individual who is responsible and their well-being.”

They are asking the public to stay away from the school.

Haffner says a police presence will be noticeable in the area of the school.

“The communication at this point and how it was delivered to the school administrator is really irrelevant. Ultimately we are trying to determine who is responsible for that communication, and ensure their safety and security.”

As for exams, it says they are being postponed.

Exams scheduled for Monday will instead take place tomorrow while those scheduled for tomorrow will be held on Thursday.

Wednesday’s Professional Development Day remains unchanged.

There is no bus transportation to the school on Monday.

The Waterloo Region District School Board released the following statement at 5:30 p.m.

“The Waterloo Region District School Board continues to work closely with the Waterloo Regional Police Service regarding the ongoing investigation related to Elmira District Secondary School.

The decision was made to close the school on February 1, out of the concern and well-being of an unidentified individual who contacted school administrators over the weekend.

“Ensuring the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and community members is always our top priority. The closure of the school was a precautionary measure,” said Peter Rubenschuh, superintendent, student achievement and well-being.

The investigation is ongoing to identify the individual, and offer assistance and support.

The school will be open on Tuesday, February 2. Exams for EDSS students that were scheduled for Monday will take place on Tuesday. Tuesday exams will take place on Thursday, February 4. The PD Day on Wednesday remains unchanged.

We thank the Waterloo Regional Police Service and the school community for their work and support.”
