Waterloo Region’s cities owed almost $60 million in property taxes

A stunning number of property owners are not paying their municipal taxes in Waterloo Region.

It’s estimated the region’s three cities are still owed about $60 million in taxes from last year.

Cambridge has the highest percentage of uncollected taxes at over 9 per cent, followed by Kitchener at 6.2 per cent and Waterloo at 4.8 per cent.

The City of Waterloo’s director of revenue services, Paul Hettinga tells today’s Record, “We need those dollars to provide services, so the intent is to get people to pay.”

He adds, “That’s our major collection tool.”

Property owners who don’t pay their taxes on time receive a reminder notice with the last resort being to force a tax sale.
