MTO making improvements to help drivers through winter driving woes

The Ministry of Transportation has made some improvements to help you travel safely on the roadways during the winter months.

The Winter Highway Maintenance Plan is working to improve overall highway maintenance by using anti-icing liquids on roads before winter storms hit, especially on heavily traveled freeways in southern Ontario.

Liane Fisher with MTO says they are also improving their Ontario’s 511 website.

“We have now included a time stamp on when the road conditions are observed. So now if you go on the website and see if the road is bare and dry you know what time the contractor patrolled that area at and how recent the information is.”

MTO has also introduced a “track my plow” program where and you can see in real time where plows are clearing roads.

The program is currently in the Owen Sound contract area which comes down into Wellington County but Fisher says MTO is looking to expand the program into other parts of the province including Waterloo Region.
