Doctor-assisted death protocol to be examined in Ontario

Premier Kathleen Wynne says her government is working to get legislation on doctor-assisted death ready in case the Supreme Court rejects Ottawa’s request for an extension to draw up new rules.

Wynne says the province is “acutely aware” that it needs to have a protocol on doctor-assisted death in place if the court refuses to grant the six-month extension.

The Supreme Court of Canada ruled last winter that Criminal Code provisions against physician-assisted death were unconstitutional and gave federal and provincial governments until February to come up with new legislation.

An oral hearing is being held today on the Trudeau government’s extension request.
