Kitchener councillors to discuss city’s operating budget on Monday

Kitchener City Council will sit down for a daylong meeting on Monday to discuss the city’s operating budget.

It also entails considering a 1.5-per cent tax increase in the city portion of property taxes, plus a significant increase in water and sewer rates.

Councillors will be discussing the prospect of the tax increase starting at 9am, which if approved in January, will be slightly higher than the inflation rate of 1.2-per cent and add $16 to the average Kitchener property worth over $280,000.

Steep water and sewer rate increases could also add another $88 a year to the average bill, with an average 10-per cent increase.

The rate-jump would be used to help fund repairs for aging water, sanitary and storm water pipes.

The public will be able to comment at a meeting on January 12th. The budget will be approved on January 18th.
