Parents concerned about how children are coping with Paris Attacks

The recent attacks on Paris have some parents concerned about how their children are coping with images they see and information they hear.

Suzanne Muscat is a Children’s Trauma Cousellor with Family Counselling and Support Services of Guelph Wellington and tells 570 News parents should validate what their child is seeing and ask them to express what they are felling.

“Ask the kids to express their feelings on it and give them an opportunity and space to let themselves process what they have seen and heard.”

Muscat adds that most kids will cope and recover after receiving information about traumatic events.

“If parent’s can remind themselves of that and reassure themselves that their kids will get through this okay, it will help alleviate their own anxiety through it.”

Muscat says it is okay to limit your child’s exposure for now.

“Monitoring where the source of information is coming from for our kids and realizing that listening to news or watching it may be overwhelming for them, to not have them exposed to it right now.”

Muscat says that if you are seeing a change in your child’s behavior that you should seek help from a trauma counsellor.
