Alex Anthopoulos says staying with Jays not the ‘right fit’

Toronto Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos says the decision to leave the team was “solely mine.”

He tells reporters that remaining with the club wasn’t “the right fit for me going forward.”

The team announced today that Anthopoulos had turned down a five-year contract extension.

The move comes less than a week after the Jays were eliminated from the post-season _ their first appearance in the playoffs since winning the World Series in 1993.

Anthopoulos says the team and incoming president Mark Shapiro were “more than generous” with their contract offer but that he felt like it was time to move on.

Reports suggested that Anthopoulos and incoming president Mark Shapiro didn’t see eye-to-eye on how to run the club.
While Anthopoulos wouldn’t go into specifics when asked about their relationship, he said Shapiro and the Blue Jays wanted him to return as GM.
