ION will not benefit from Brampton’s rejection of LRT

Brampton city councillors voted early this morning to reject a controversial transit project that would have seen an LRT route run through the city’s downtown.

That means a lot of provincial money won’t be needed for the project, and many are wondering where it might go.

Regional Chair Ken Seiling says that money is technically supposed to stay within the GTA projects:

“That money is not available outside the GTA to the best of our knowledge. It’s within the GTA pot of money and will be used for transit or infrastructure projects within the GTA.”

Seiling adds, “what we are talking to provinces about right now is how the $13 or $14 million for the rest of the province is going to be allocated and whether we can do anything locally on transit, or some form of transit locally.”

Brampton Council voted 7-4 to reject the plan that Queen’s Park had approved.
