HOUSTON – The latest on a fatal shooting outside a Texas Southern University student-housing complex (all times local):

5:40 p.m.

Houston police say investigators are questioning two men who were detained after a fatal shooting outside a student-housing complex at Texas Southern University.

Police spokeswoman Jodi Silva said Friday evening that neither man has been arrested or charged in the shooting, which killed a male student and injured another person. She said police also are looking for a third man for questioning.

Silva wouldn’t say whether police believed the suspected shooter was in custody. She noted that police aren’t treating the case as an “active shooter” investigation, in part because witnesses said the shooter wasn’t moving from place to place and fled the scene after the shooting.

Silva said investigators also are looking into whether the incident is related to a shooting that happened early Friday morning near the same housing complex that sent one person to a hospital with a minor injury.

Texas Southern University’s president says students need to be more vigilant following a fatal shooting at a student housing complex.

University President John Rudley says students need to remember that the Houston school is in the inner city, and that “crime is all around us.”

Rudley also criticized what he said was a culture among some students who believe they shouldn’t snitch on each other.

The shooting occurred late Friday morning in the parking lot outside University Courtyard Apartments, which is on the edge of campus. The shooting prompted officials to temporarily put the school on lockdown.

Investigators say one student was killed and another person was wounded. Police say they have at least two people in custody for questioning and don’t consider it an active shooting investigation.

Students at Texas Southern University say they don’t feel safe on campus in the wake of recent shootings, including one that left a student dead and another person wounded.

Nineteen-year-old Brittney Solomon says she had planned to move onto campus, but now she’s reluctant following a shooting late Friday morning at a university-owned student housing complex. Soloman says it’s “really nerve-racking feeling that a person here could have a gun.”

The shooting prompted a campus lockdown and order for students and teachers to remain in their classrooms. At least two other shootings have been reported near or on campus in the last week, prompting officials to increase police presence on campus.

But Daijsa Fowls, also 19, says there’s little enforcement on campus. Fowls says she wouldn’t feel safe bringing her 3-year-old son onto campus.

She says, “A bullet has no name. It could hit anybody.”

University President John Rudley says the student was a freshman at the school. The student’s name, age and gender haven’t been released.

Houston police spokeswoman Jodi Silva says the other person who was shot is hospitalized in stable condition. That person’s name and condition also haven’t been released.

Silva says the shooting happened in a parking lot outside the University Courtyard Apartments, which is on the edge of the school’s Houston campus. She says two people have now been detained, but that a motive remains unclear. She says a third person is being sought for questioning, but that there is no active shooting investigation.
