Wheels in motion for new bike lanes on Union St. in Kitchener

Opponents of the proposed installation of bike lanes along a stretch of Union Street in Kitchener will not be happy with this news.

Kitchener city council has given the green light to the lanes, as part of its Cycling Master Plan.

They will be installed on Union from Breithaupt Park to Lancaster Street.

Parking will only be allowed on one side of the street, but residents will have a say on what side that will be allowed.

Council is stressing citizen engagement and consultation as it moves forward not only on this project, but others in the future as well.

Councillor Dave Schnider says, “One clear theme that emerged” was “that in order to be successful with implementing the cycling master plan, the city needs to have an open, transparent and consistent approach to citizen engagement prior to any significant change.”

Director of Transportation Services, Justin Readman, adds, “While consultation happens for every project, we recognize that developing a more comprehensive and standardized approach to how we facilitate this consultation can be improved and we have already begun assessing how we can improve this process in the future.”

The long term goal of the Cycling Master Plan is to install over 100 kilometres of bikeways on streets throughout the city.
