Police say risk ‘not yet known’ following shooting of 60-year-old man with arrow

Many people have questions after a suspicious death in Kitchener Monday morning, including police.

60-year-old Michael F. Gibbon died in the hospital after being found with life threatening injuries from an arrow on Margaret Avenue near the Breithaupt Centre.

That home was surrounded by police tape, and officers for most of the day; who also surrounded and entered a home on Guelph Street.

Police say they’re still in the early stage of the investigation, and the risk to public safety is not yet known. They say the public should still be vigilant, aware of their surroundings and are asked to report any suspicious activity to police.

“Anytime when we have a person who sustained an injury that we’re trying to identify the person or persons responsible, we want people to be aware of their surroundings and vigilant to the situation,” said Mike Haffner, with Regional Police. “But more importantly, if they observe anything suspicious, or out of the ordinary, call police.”

“We’ve designated considerable resources to the Michael Gibbons homicide investigation, but we’re still appealing to the public for any information that may lead us to the person or persons responsible for his death, there has to be someone out there who has information and knows who is responsible for this.” said Haffner.

“Right now we’re planning on setting up a command post eventually, and conduct a canvas of the area to get some information as to what occurred this morning,” said Haffner. Upwards of six schools were put in a Hold and Secure in the area. All have since been lifted. “We have a relationship with the schools in the area, and when incidents happen where there is some concern for the community’s safety, we do notify the schools,” says Haffner. “I mean the whole purpose of the Hold and Secure is that we have an emergency situation; maybe not related to the actual school, but we’re able to ensure the safety of the students and the parents dropping them off.”

“There’s a tonne of questions, and we have a tonne of questions as well, and that’s why we’re investigating and meeting to try and figure out what the circumstances are here. We need to flush out what exactly happened.”

Haffner said he couldn’t say how or even if, the two locations they entered were related, but officers were moving between the two.

Anyone who has information is asked to call Police at 519-650-8500 ext. 8666 or Crimestoppers.
