Major fire at Waste Management building in Cambridge

Fire officials estimate damage will be near $15 million after a fire at the Waste Management Plant in Cambridge Monday night.

Around 20 firefighters were on scene battling the blaze at the plant on Conestoga Blvd near Sheldon Drive.

Cambridge Fire Chief Neil Main spoke with 570 News.

“It’s a large factory fire in a recycling plant that recycles cardboard, plastic and paper and it started in the packaging area where they compact the paper.”

He says that all 20 employees were evacuated safely.

“They were working in there at the time and noticed a small fire….they evacuated and called the fire department.”

He adds that it is hard to put a damage figure on the fire at this time but it is a significant amount of damage for this building.

It is also too early to determine the cause of the blaze.

The area of Conestoga Boulevard between Sheldon and Bishop in Cambridge is blocked to traffic at this time.
