Fire Prevention Week

Waterloo Fire Rescue will be out in full force today raising awareness about Fire Prevention Week.

They’ll be set up in the parking lot of the Home Depot at King and Northfield educating people on the importance of Smoke Alarms from 10 am – 3pm. If this doesn’t work for your schedule, they’ll be back next Saturday at Conestoga Mall.

The official start to Fire Prevention week is Sunday, but Waterloo Fire Rescue is getting an early start asking people to make sure they have working smoke alarms on all floors of their home.

They are also asking people to have smoke alarms in the bedroom.

John Percy, Public Education Officer with Waterloo Fire Rescue tells 570 News that the week’s message is
“Hear the Beep Where You Sleep. Every Bedroom Needs a Working Smoke Alarm!”

“Half of home fire deaths result from fires reported at night between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. when most people are asleep. Home smoke alarms can alert people to a fire before it spreads, giving everyone enough time to get out.”

Listed below are some key pieces of information that everyone should keep in mind when it comes to staying safe.

– Test alarms at least monthly by pushing the test button.
– Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old or sooner if they don’t respond properly based on the manufacturer’s instructions.
– Make sure everyone in the home knows the sound of the smoke alarm and understands what to do when they hear it.
– If the smoke alarm sounds, get outside and stay outside. Go to your outside meeting place.
– Call the fire department from outside the home.
