Margaret Avenue Bridge opening on Friday

Some good news for motorists! The new bridge along Margaret Ave in Kitchener will finally be open this Friday.

Chris Spere Manager Construction Engineering with the City of Kitchener tells 570 News that demolition started in October of 2013.

“Really it’s been almost 2 1/2 years since we closed it to the time we’ve opened it. It’s a massive milestone that has been a real pinch point for traffic going between Waterloo and Kitchener…it’s been a tough summer for everybody with all the construction.”

Spere adds that there will be some lane restrictions as the final asphalt surface is installed. It should be open in its entirety late next week.

The grand re-opening of the bridge will be held on Friday, Oct. 30 at 6 p.m. The bridge will be closed from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Oct. 30 for that celebration.

The bridge was demolished in the fall of 2013 after a structural evaluation showed several safety concerns.
