Survey: We behave badly behind the wheel, and we know it

Be careful on your ride home today. It seems we’re pretty bad drivers.

But, a Kanetix.ca survey shows, we’re at least honest about it.

More than 75% of Canadians admitted to bad driving behavior.

Speeding topped the list, with 58% of Canadians, and 62% of us in Ontario admitting guilt, which is uderstandable to Anne Marie Thomas with Kanetix.

“I guess we’re in more of a hurry here in Ontario,” said Thomas. “These days we all have to be somewhere; kids to take here, meetings to get to there, we always just seem to be in a rush.”

Speeding was followed by using profanity, with 31% of us copping to dropping a couple swear words.

Shockingly, only 22% of us nationally were prepared to admit we followed too close. Thomas finds this one funny, based on the driving practices taught in the beginning of leaving a certain number of car lengths between you and the vehicle you’re following.

“Try doing that in rush hour. You can’t leave one car length without someone jumping in,” says Thomas. “21% of Ontarians say they follow too closely, which surprised me. I would have thought Ontario would have been higher.”

Provincially eight in 10 of us admited to bad driving behaviour, with speeding coming in as the most common.

According to Kanetix, men are more likely to engage in these behaviours.
