Kitchener’s Hybrid Turkeys fined for animal cruelty

Kitchener-based Hybrid Turkeys has been fined $5,600 after pleading guilty to one count of animal cruelty.

It was accused of failing to exercise reasonable care and supervision of the euthanasia of animals.

The charge was related to a complaint received by the Ontario SPCA in March 2014.

That complaint was filed by an animal rights group and aimed at a company-run farm in Bright.

It was accompanied by a video that showed the birds being kicked, punched and clubbed.

The company has issued a statement saying, “In 2014, when the company was made aware of a situation involving animals in its care, Hybrid Turkeys took immediate action to investigate the incident and the employees involved, while co-operating fully with authorities.”

The company’s Managing Director, Dave Libertini says, “Our company has zero tolerance for animal abuse. We took immediate steps to address this situation. We have a solid record of investment of time and resources into all aspects of animal welfare – including research and advocacy as well as policy, procedures and training. This will continue into the future.”
