More drivers can use HOV lanes starting today

More drivers will be able to use HOV lanes starting on Tuesday as the province lowers the minimum number of people that need to be in a vehicle.

A driver and just one other passenger can use the lanes beginning July 28.

The 235 kilometres of HOV lanes were added to highways 401, 404, and 427, as well as the Don Valley Parkway, Gardiner Expressway, Queen Elizabeth Way, Lake Shore Boulevard, and portions of Jane Street, north of Steeles Avenue, for the Pan Am Games.

For the Parapan Am Games, the HOV lanes will run from July 28 to Aug. 18 between 5 a.m. and 11 p.m.

They are also open to emergency vehicles, public transit, licensed taxis, airport limousines, and, in some circumstances, electric vehicles with green license plates and motorcycles.
