Uber drivers could face steep fines under Region’s taxi bylaws

Local drivers looking to make a quick dollar by signing up for Uber could face a hefty fine.

Today’s Record reports, the Region says it will investigate and possibly charge Uber drivers with contravening the taxi bylaw — but only on a complaint basis.

A new vehicles-for-hire bylaw that will be announced in August should change the way ride-hailing services are treated; however, it isn’t expected to go into effect until January.

Until then, fines won’t come cheap: they could go as high as $25,000.

Uber launched in Waterloo Region last Thursday.
